There's a version of Palworld where you're constantly running around gathering resources manually. And then there's the version where you've got a perfectly optimized base running around the clock while you're off exploring or fighting bosses. The difference comes down to understanding how base assignment actually works.
How Pal Work Assignment Works
Pals don't need manual assignment to specific structures. They automatically go to work they're suited for based on their work suitability levels. Place a Pal with Kindling and it heads to the furnace. Planting Pal goes to the farm. Work suitability level directly determines speed — Level 3 Kindling smelts significantly faster than Level 1.
SAN Management: Keep Your Base Running 24/7
- Build a Hot Spring first — Pals use it automatically when off-duty
- Build a Pal Bed for every Pal at your base
- Use Workaholic passive skill for high-demand jobs — slows SAN depletion significantly
- Keep base compact — long walking distances waste time and drain SAN

Base Layout Principles
- Cluster production structures together — Furnaces near storage near crafting benches means Pals walk less between tasks
- Beds near the center — Pals shouldn't walk to the edge to sleep. Central beds mean faster SAN recovery.
- Hot Spring accessible to all — Don't tuck it in a corner. All Pals should reach it quickly when their SAN dips.
- Farms near water structures — Watering Pals cover more plots efficiently when farms and water sources are grouped.
FAQ
How many Pals can one base hold?
Up to 15 per base in single-player by default. Multiplayer server settings vary.
What's the fastest way to improve base output?
Two things: upgrade work suitability level through breeding, and get the Artisan passive skill (+50% work speed) on your key workers. Combining Level 4 work suitability with Artisan roughly doubles output compared to a base-level Pal.
Do I need combat Pals at the base?
Yes — wild Pal raids happen regularly. Assign at least 1–2 high-attack Pals for defense. Knocklem and Menasting Terra handle both work and defense well without wasting a dedicated slot.
